Abstract

Fatigue cracks initiate in very tiny regions along slip bands. Existing models are criticized because they consider the initial crack to be rather large. The initial stage of fatigue crack initiation along a slip band is suggested to be the inverse of whisker formation with diffusion of vacancies playing a role.
