Abstract

ABSTRACT The fantasy gaming industry in India is expected to reach a market size of around 20 billion USD by 2025, with fantasy cricket contributing to around 85% of the revenue. Only for this year’s IPL, the expected revenue of fantasy gaming platforms is around 640 million USD. During IPL 2023, these platforms hosted over 10 billion fantasy teams with an average ticket size of 0.75 USD. Around 70% of the users of these platforms belong to small towns and rural areas where the daily income is very low. The article first highlights what tempts these people from low-income families to invest in fantasy cricket. The article then discusses the chances of winning and losing money and the dark side of such fantasy platforms. The article finally highlights the stand of the Supreme Court of India and various state governments regarding the legality of such platforms, which revolves around whether this is a game of skill or luck. Finally, the article concludes whether fantasy cricket is gambling or a game of skill and suggests the pressing need for strict regulations to combat the dark side of it.
