Abstract

Normal, human difibrinated blood has been incubated at 37° C in vitro for periods up to 96 hrs and factors affecting eventual lysis of the cells have been studied. Prelytic changes in red cell volume and water, red cell Na+ and K+, glucose consumption and ATP levels, and osmotic fragility have also been studied. These data have provided an explanation for eventual lysis of red cells incubated in vitro.
