Scientific research processes are accompanied by burgeoning amounts of research data that serves as findings of the research and provides a platform for the results to be verifiable. Scientific researchers are under pressure to make their data openly available to other researchers for use. Access to scientific data and its curation has become a dominant theme in scientific policy discussions. Besides the funder requirements, researchers are making their data openly available for a number of reasons that include, raising the profiles of their research outputs, to increase their citations, to validate their research outputs and for their authenticity and integrity as researchers. However, not all researchers possess the skills to curate their own data and make it openly available for use in an open environment that is FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable). The primary objective of this paper is to raise awareness of the strategic role of data scientists in the scientific research process. The study seeks to contribute towards a growing and emergent discourse of data science in HEIs. It also seeks to contribute towards an educational model for data scientists in HEIs in South Africa. In-order to realise these objectives the paper asks the following research questions:How are the emergent roles of data scientists conceptualised in HEIs in South Africa? What is the strategic role of a data scientist in the scientific research process?.This study analysed data science programs offered by universities in South Africa to understand how the role of data scientists is conceptualised and to delineate the scope of this emergent field. A qualitative content analysis survey method is used to analyse courses offered by HEIs in South Africa. Preliminary findings from the research revealed that data scientists are drawn from fields like mathematics, statistics, information science, and computer science. The practical jobs of data scientists as conceptualised by the majority of universities employs theories drawn from the information science, computer science and statistics. The data scientists are expected to work closely with the researchers where the research is done. Most universities are offering data science programs at post-graduate level as professional courses for learners coming in from diverse backgrounds. The study recommends that the next generation of data scientists in a South African context should possess a cocktail of skills that enable them to conduct data analysis and enquiry to enable others to work with digital data.
The article is devoted to the characterization of the specifics of the work of special institutions of higher education of Dnieper Ukraine on the edge of XIX‒XX centuries. In the process of scientific research, it has been established that the network of institutions of higher education of Dnieper Ukraine on the edge of XIX‒XX centuries was represented by three universities (Kharkiv, Kiev, Novorossiysk universities) and several institutes of special education subordinated to various departments of the Russian Empire, such as: Kharkiv Veterinary (1873), Nijensky History and Philology (1875), Kharkiv Technological (1885), Kiev Polytechnic (1898) universities. Features of the organizational and administrative structure and educational process of the mentioned types of institutions of higher education during the studied period were revealed on the basis of comparative and correlative analysis of scientific literature, archival sources. It has been established that, in contrast to universities, special institutions of higher education were guided in their work by separate statutes and regulations, which became more uniform at the beginning of the XX th century. This led to certain differences in the structure (lack of faculties, introduction of separation into departments), the definition of the composition and functions of governing bodies of higher education institutions (director, council or conference, board), formation of professorial teaching staff (professors, associate professors, private associate professors, adjuncts, graduates of secondary education institutions), awarding degrees (exclusively master's degree in veterinary studies), etc.
\nA number of peculiarities that characterized the organization of the educational process in institutions of special higher education was found: the development of special rules for admission to each particular educational institution, taking into account the professional orientation, the definition of the term of studies (4-5 years), the provision of preference to such forms of training as practical and laboratory classes, increase of the volume of different types of practices organized on the basis of industrial enterprises or special institutions. It has been found out that special institutions of higher education were distinguished by the system of evaluation and organization of control of educational and cognitive activity of students. Advantage was given to such forms of control as rehearsals, pass tests, project defence. The article also focuses on the regulation of the rules of the internal regulations in higher educational institutions, the rules of behaviour of students, the types of encouragements to study (state and nominal scholarships, exemptions from tuition fees), and penalties, among which detention in a punishment room was practiced.

For the effective solution of the tasks facing regions of the Russian Federation in the field of education there is a formation of associations of regional higher education institutions. One of the main objectives of similar educational associations is assistance to creation of system of electronic education and to creation of conditions for preparation and formation of new generation of shots in the region, capable to realize sustainable dynamic development of economy. In general, the task at the set restrictions in resources is set for associations (material and non-material) educational institutions and restrictions in time (the planning period) to achieve goals with the minimum financial expenses. At the same time, it is obvious that merger of educational institutions on a regional sign objectively has a number of the features connected with heterogeneity of the directions of training of pupils and other indicators of efficiency of the higher education institutions having the reflection in data of monitoring of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation. It is obvious that already at the first stage of activity for each of the directions (vector) of activity it is required to define a set of higher education institutions - participants of the project. Complexity of selection is, in particular, that, as a rule, implementation of the project is connected at the same time with many aspects of activity of higher education institution. Thus, by some criteria it is necessary to create a certain initial great number of participants (higher education institutions). In work realization of cluster approach for formation of subgroups of participants of the project for effective achievement of the multivector purposes of the project is offered. The choice of concrete procedure of a clustering locates in research and for substantial interpretation of their results and an assessment of adequacy other procedures of a clustering are used. Results of research on the basis of two years' monitoring was allocation of couple of leading higher education institutions of the region. Besides, analogousness of results of various procedures of a clustering (treelike and on a method of averages) indicates their reliability.

Affirmative action in college admissions is a contentious topic which has inspired a significant amount of legislation affecting its use. This legislation exists independently at the state and federal levels, but when viewed together within the entire legislative framework, individual pieces of legislation contradict each other, providing confusing and conflicting legal guidance for higher education admissions counselors. Admissions counselors’ daily activities are governed by this legislation, but without a high level of knowledge or awareness, admissions counselors could unknowingly engage in recruiting activities that violate one or more aspects of the related legislation. This study investigated the current level of knowledge in higher education admissions counselors at two public universities in the state of California regarding the conflicting legislation affecting the use of race-conscious admissions practices. This is important because the use of race-conscious admissions practices is the most divisive issue currently facing the American higher education system, and can have significant legal ramifications for institutions of higher education. While previous research has identified the effects of race-conscious admissions practices, it did not sufficiently identify the current legislation affecting the use of race-conscious admissions practices, the conflicting nature of the legislation, or the perception or awareness of the admissions counselors of the conflicting nature of the current legislation. This study, therefore, aims to determine the perspective of the higher education admissions counselor, the overall level of awareness and knowledge regarding the multiple pieces and layers of legislation, and the level of awareness for the conflicting legal guidance created when the legislation is viewed as a whole. This research has the objective to better understand the individual pieces of legislation, their individual affects, and when combined, the nature of their conflicting guidance. To achieve this, in-depth, individual interviews were conducted with higher education admissions counselors at two public institutions located within the state of California. Conventional content analysis was used to analyze the multiple perspectives found within the primary data and illustrate the overarching themes expressed within the data. The findings indicate that admissions counselors claim to have a low level of awareness and knowledge concerning the legislation affecting race-conscious admissions practices. Once they were provided a basic overview of the legislation, though, interviewees were able to discern that the legislation provided conflicting guidance. Additional findings suggest that admissions counselors do not fundamentally agree with the admissions practices that they follow, but are still adhering to the practices in spite of this. The research concludes by recommending areas for further research, and suggesting specific actions that can be pursued as a means of implementing the knowledge created through this research.

The aim of the project was to investigate corporate governance practices in UK higher education institutions (HEIs). Specifically, the project sought to examine the role and effectiveness of the audit committee in supporting what was initially conceptualised as financial leadership’ in HEIs. What makes a board, and its various committees, an effective mechanism is a key and recurring question, which has been raised in academic, practitioner and policymaking circles and is relevant to companies, public bodies, charities and universities alike. The case of the audit committee is often highlighted in practice and in the literature, since it is a central plank of any corporate governance structure, normally tasked with overseeing the financial, control, auditing and risk management aspects of the organisation. In the light of the rapidly changing and uncertain financial environment faced by UK HEIs, the role of the audit committee is critical in monitoring, advising and shaping the HEI’s direction, and its work and structure have been the subject of detailed guidance by the Committee of University Chairs (CUC), supplemented by developmental resources from the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education and accountancy firms. However, what has been missing so far is a comprehensive cross-sectional analysis of the audit committee’s actual structure and characteristics in UK HEIs and the impact this has on organisational outcomes, and a deeper understanding of the role and activities of the audit committee from the field. In terms of the practical direction adopted during the research and how the results are presented in the final report, this has cascaded into three sub-objectives that we have fully achieved; ie, to: (a) investigate the characteristics of the audit committee in UK HEIs (b) investigate HEIs’ level of public accountability and the likely impact of the audit committee on accountability and other organisational outcomes (c) explore the role and effectiveness of the audit committee in detail.

This paper aims to examine, through quantitative data, the activity of swine showed a decrease in negative environmental impacts, comparing the number of assessments every year since the inauguration of the environmental agency in the far west region of Santa Catarina. In addition, it presents a history of the swine production in the region, listing the main pollutants resulting from the activity and its consequences on the environment and the main laws and regulations governing the activity. To evaluate the performance in environmental management of swine production, were raised the total number of assessments conducted by EPA during the period studied, using as an indicator the number of annual filings for the period 1999 to 2010. It starts from the assumption that the increase or reduction of fines reflect the behavior of producers regarding compliance with laws and regulations related to the activity and the level of commitment in the relationship with the environment. The study consists of research whose approach is descriptive quantitative approach. As for the procedures is identified as documentary research, and data were extracted from the files of the environmental agency. Therefore, we conclude that the pollution problem caused by the lack of efficient management of the activity has a profound influence on the environment and that the table presents only be reversed when the various sectors concerned charting together common goals and objectives can alleviate existing problems, achieving the economic objectives in a sustainable manner the environmental point of view. The discussions and the numerical results presented showed that there was a decrease in negative environmental impacts during the period studied, either by raising awareness of pork producers, whether by the socialization of environmental problems and the willingness to work with either the prevention or more rigorous action imposed by laws and regulations and the repressive action of the supervisory board.

This thesis focused on the use of an integrated approach to leadership development, with special emphasis on the role of executive coaching (one-to-one coaching, and group coaching). I chose the topic for study due to its growing importance and utilisation in the corporate setting and higher education research. The demarcating lines between higher education and corporate education are getting thinner and thinner. Collaboration has bridged the gap between the two, while corporate universities and corporate academies are now offering some of the courses offered by higher education. Leadership development, in both the corporate world and higher education, share many commonalities; including coaching and mentoring. One can say that corporate learning has become the higher education for practitioners, as is being evidenced by the rise in the establishment of corporate universities and corporate academies. Corporate learning is an active area of investment for corporate organisations as corporate learning helps the organisations to improve and retain their leaders and professionals. This study used a phenomenological approach to capture the experience of those undertaking such development. This study aims at exploring participants' interaction with the world of leadership development through executive coaching, and the meaning they developed from that experience. The results offered some insight into the pros and cons of one-to-one executive coaching, and group executive coaching, and factors to consider when deploying either of these methods. The study also provided suggestions on how to improve the practice of executive coaching. It suggests measures that can be implemented to enhance learning for practitioners. It also suggests how one can leverage the concept of executive coaching in developing the organisation's leaders. This research contributes to the existing body of knowledge about executive coaching and leadership development, especially in a corporate setting and Higher education setting. This study concludes by calling for collaboration between institutions of higher education, the corporate community, and coaching practitioners, to create awareness, raise the standard and create a pragmatic and enduring legacy for executive coaching field.

The purpose of this study lied in examining the implementation of the fundraising campaigns in the higher educational institutions. In the literature review, a well-structured fundraising organization, CASE, is mentioned. Latter the commonly applied fundraising techniques were examined and a list of the comparisons of the fundraising techniques was also provided. The research was an exploratory one, therefore programmed sampling and interviews were applied to collect data. Six universities were interviewed about their fundraising endeavor. The findings and suggestions were (1) our government should facilitate the higher educational institutions to undertake fundraising activities; (2) the educational institutions should be aware of the significance of the effects of fundraising campaigns and transmit the concepts to related targets; (3) some improvements of fundraising techniques can be made in order to meet the ultimate goal.

Research on environmental advocacy has tended to focus on outcomes and achievements rather than the processes through which these are achieved. In addition, minimal research has attended in detail to the complexity of environmental advocacy, or explored measures to through which to enhance advocates’ prospects of success. The environment movement itself has given scarce attention to promoting the skills, abilities and predispositions that contribute to effective advocacy. Indeed, most environmental non-government organisations (ENGOs) in Australia appear to believe that scientific or expert knowledge will be sufficient to influence environmental decision-makers and consequently provide minimal training or education to enhance advocacy. This thesis is a response to these problems. It seeks to develop an understanding of, and model for, activist education and training in the Australian environment movement. The two main bodies of literature that inform the study are social movement and adult education literature. The former provides the context for the study. Social movement theorists present various explanations of how and why environmental activists work for change. These theorists also discuss the organisational structures and modes of operation typically adopted by activists. The second body of literature is utilised in this thesis to provide a synthesis of relevant educational orientations, traditions and practices. Popular, experiential and adult environmental education offer promising strategies for advocacy organisations that seek to enhance activists’ skills and abilities. The research questions posed in this study lie at the convergence of these two bodies of literature. Two empirical studies were undertaken during this inquiry. The first was conducted with the Queensland Conservation Council, an environmental advocacy organisation where the researcher was employed for five years. The study drew on methods and techniques associated with ethnography and action research to identify, implement and evaluate a range of interventions which aimed to educate and train advocates. Three cycles of inquiry generated useful insights into environmental advocacy and identified useful strategies through which advocacy may be enhanced. The second study, a case study based on interviews and observation, explored the Heart Politics movement. The ethnographic research methods utilised in this case study resulted in a rich description and critical appreciation of the strengths and weaknesses of Heart Politics gatherings as activist education. These two studies contributed to the development of a grounded and endogenous theory of education and training for environmental advocacy. This theory is based on a set of observations concerning the provision of activist education: (1) that most activist learning occurs informally and unintentionally through participation in social action such as environmental campaigns; (2) that this learning can be assessed according to a five-category framework and tends to favour specific categories including the development of social action and organisational development skills rather than alternative categories such as political analysis and personal development; (3) that this informal learning can be harnessed and enhanced through strategies which situate learning in the context of action and promote heightened awareness of the learning dimension of social action; and (4) that a key obstacle to education and training in the environment movement is a conspicuous lack of professional development or support for the people involved in facilitating and coordinating activist education activities and programs. These people are often volunteers and infrequently possess qualifications as educators or facilitators but are more likely to be seasoned activists. They tend to work in isolation as activist education activities are sporadic, geographically diffuse and ad hoc. These observations along with other insights acquired through participatory action research and ethnographic inquiry led to a set of conclusions, some of which have already been implemented or initiated during the course of this study. The first conclusion is that strategies to promote the professional development of activist educators may benefit from the development of texts tailored to the tactical orientations and political and other circumstances of Australian environmental advocacy groups. Texts, alone, are considered an inadequate response. The study also concludes that informal networks, formal and informal courses and other strategies to assist collaboration and peer learning among activist educators offer considerable benefits. Other conclusions pertain to the benefits of collaborating with adult educators and tertiary institutions, and professionals, to the relative merits of activist workshops and other forms of delivery, to the opportunities for activist training presented by regular environment movement gatherings and conferences and to the significant merits of promoting and supporting mentorship relationships between novice and experienced activists.

Summary The article is focused on possible fears, demands, needs and factors that are reflected by PLHIV concerning educational sector in Lithuanian context. For research chosen qualitative research strategy, which is based on two knowledge positions such as socially constructed knowledge and participant knowledge. For data collection was applied in – depth interview and the data was analyzed by using the qualitative content analysis. PLHIV experience the fear of being rejected after informing others about his or her HIV diagnosis because they do not trust the ability of their environment to keep confidentiality and are afraid of negative attitudes which manifest themselves as special attention towards PLHIV, and not always in a positive sense. Therefore, PLHIV make a decision to inform their environment only in exceptional cases according to the need and intensity of communication with particular persons. Communication with a medical specialist and a psychologist according to need is vital for PLHIV. The medical specialist in the educational system should not only perform the role of a consultant but also engage in educational activity by working with the school’s teachers because the latter forms attitudes in the school. The analysis of the experiences of PLHIV revealed the necessity to develop social competence of students in schools, to promote their awareness of general life values, to involve parents in the awareness-raising process by providing information about HIV / AIDS based on scientific arguments, and to develop and expand specific knowledge (of anatomy, physiology, infectology, pharmacology, psychology, education, sociology) of teachers related to the HIV / AIDS context. However, education must be professional, carried out by professional medical specialists and psychologists who have experience in working with PLHIV. Also relevant is the engagement of PLHIV themselves in education within educational institutions by transferring their experience to school communities.
