Abstract

The extinction efficiency of a spherical inclusion in a dispersive and absorptive medium is calculated using a modified version of the Mie theory. For a dispersive material inclusion, two types of surface modes are excited by the electromagnetic radiation, while in the case of a pore only one type appears. The observation of the surface modes in the absorption spectra of thin films, or in the reflectivity spectra of bulk samples is demonstrated in the non-retarded limit by using the effective dielectric constant formulation.
