Abstract

Despite public health initiatives to encourage a healthy lifestyle, obesity levels continue to rise, with more than half of women entering pregnancy with a body mass index (BMI) outside the normal range. When combined with associated comorbidities, having a raised BMI can put women and birthing people at higher risk of poor outcomes throughout the perinatal period. Providing informed and person-centred care, midwives can support this growing population of women to achieve optimal pregnancy outcomes and experience positive maternity care.
