Abstract

A new cryogenic cooling approach implemented in Liquid Nitrogen as a lubricant has been developed for cutting zone during our milling operation in AISI D2 hardened steel, to enhance the metal removing operation efficiency. In our work, the test investigation has taken place in an estimated efficiency of TiN as well as TiAlN layered tools during dry, wet and liquid Nitrogen during lubrication techniques. The applications for the LN2 coolant proved in thus minimization for the temperature behind cutting, cutting forces, finishing off the surface for both the tools, compared with those measured in dry and wet metal removing operational situations. It is observed that while machining with TiAlN coated tool, the temperature behind cutting was minimized nearly up to 18% and the forces behind the cutting were minimized approximately 13% compared to machining with a TiN coated tool under LN2 cooling condition.
