Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop and use health‐related fitness portfolios for first (approximate ages 6‐8 years)to sixth (approximate ages 11‐13 years) gradestudents in physical education classes. The content of the portfolios focused on flexibility and training/conditioning, and assessed cognitive knowledge, critical thinking skills, and physical activity behaviours. Nine hundred and five students from seven schools from first to seventh grade, who completed at least three of six portfolio tasks, were the participants. Seven teachers served as portfolio administrators and as experts in rating thecontent validity of the portfolio tasks. Results indicatedthat students performed well on portfolio tasks asking simple knowledge questions, such as portfolio task 16 asking students to draw and label things they play with when they are physically active (M ‐ 6.51, SD =. 73; out of 7 points). Students didnot score as wellon portfolio tasks that required critical thinking skills.
