Abstract

Power System Corporation Ltd, India (POSOCO) started it's pioneering efforts of implementation of Wide Area Measurement System (WAMS)/Synchrophasors technology, in India, in year 2010. First project was taken up in Northern Region on pilot basis. Subsequently, several other pilot projects were implemented in other regions also. Finally, these pilot projects have been integrated at National level with the consolidation of data from all regional PDCs at National Control Center Phasor Data Concentrator (PDC). As on date, total 63 Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) have been deployed all over India. Since, these pilot projects were implemented separately and by different vendors the manufacturers of PDCs and PMUs deployed are different even though their technical specifications are same. During integration of these pilot projects many issues were encountered and resolved. This has imparted a significant understanding and learning to POSOCO in integration of PMUs and PDCs from different vendors. Lessons learnt in solving these issues were unique to India in the wake of first of its kind implementation and integration in India. The authors have consolidated these learning which have been elaborated in this paper for the benefit of power system fraternity.
