Abstract
Abstract Microstructure and magnetic properties of electrodeposited Co–Fe–Ni–S films were studied to seek their feasibility for applications in microelectromagnetic devices such as high area density recording heads. Soft magnetic films for head core application must be a unique combination of the low losses, high permeability, near zero magnetostriction and high saturation magnetic flux density ( B s ). Superior soft magnetic properties with high B s are realized in nanocrystalline Co–Fe–Ni–S alloy films. One of the most suitable Co–Fe–Ni–S films has a composition of 68.5:18:12:1.5 and the following characteristics: B s =2.1 T; H c =75 A/m; λ s =1.8×10 −6 ; μ rh =1400 at 100 MHz; H k =1.04 kA/m and specific resistivity ρ =68 μΩ cm. Grain size was found to be in the order of 10–14 nm. From a processing standpoint, we were able to control film thickness uniformity, composition and, respectively, structure that is film magnetic properties by adjusting potential and current control conditions.
