Abstract
This paper was presented at the conference of the Association held in conjunction with the ACTFL Convention of November, 1971. It represents a shortened version of a chapter of my dissertation, Discourse constraints on Japanese sentence structure. (SUNY/ Buffalo). This work was supported in part by an NSF Grant (GS-3208) and a Woodrow Wilson Dissertation Fellowship. I am indebted to Miss Wako Tawa and Mrs. Takako Michii for their assistance. Any errors are mine.
