Abstract

The prevailing view of organizational status assumes that status rankings do not change much over time. Recently, however, scholars have begun to argue that in some markets status rankings are not necessarily stable, and that organizations actively react to status changes. Our symposium builds on this new understanding of status dynamics and provides new insights on evaluation processes, from which status rankings originate. The program we have assembled puts together cutting-edge research from scholars who have studied organizational status, evaluation processes, and rankings from a variety of perspectives. We plan to start the symposium by discussing the implications of status dynamics both at the organizational and at the individual level. We will then gradually move to a more in- depth discussion of evaluation processes, with a focus on the interaction between amateur and expert evaluators and gender discrimination.
