Abstract

One of the most important active safety systems in a vehicle is braking system. The cooling of braking system must be considered as brakes are too much heated during hard and continuous braking. Due to which large thermomechanical stresses are induced in it. This affects disc brake rotor’s durability and performance of brake system. The objective of this study is to evaluate the thermomechanical properties of three different materials of the disc brake rotor during the braking process. The metals which are under consideration are AISI4140, SS420 and AISI1020. A single identical design model is used in the present analysis so that results of transient thermal and static structural are only influenced by material properties. Transient thermal and static structural analysis is carried out on ANSYS software and based on the results; SS420 is found out to be best material in terms of thermomechanical properties.
