Abstract

The manuscript elaborates the historical sequence of events and decisions involved in the establishment and maintenance of a research center in a school of social work. Functions of the research center in the school of social work are reviewed in terms of securing grants, research consultation for faculty and students, curriculum offerings and research opportunities for students and faculty. Requisites of maintaining the center are discussed. Specific items addressed are: budget, number of faculty and support staff, determination of research foci, center autonomy and organizational linkages with other components of the school. Requisites for establishing inter-organizational relationships with other departments of the university and with state agencies are discussed in terms of facilitating of funding. Where relevant, items are discussed in terms of the implications for research centers in other schools of social work.
