Abstract

Arc erosion performances of electrical contacts are vital to guarantee the stable operation of electric power systems. In this work, arc erosion performances of WCu/Ti3SiC2 materials in SF6, CO2, O2, and Ar were systematically researched. Detachment of silicon layers from Ti3SiC2 occur in the 4 atm, Ti3SiC2 plays an important role in protecting the composites. Severe splashings and cavities are found on the eroded surfaces in CO2 and O2. Based on the arc energy densities and composition changes, arc erosion mechanisms of WCu/Ti3SiC2 in various atmospheres are proposed.
