Abstract
The equilibrium and dynamical properties of classical and quantum bilayers with spatially separated electrons and holes are investigated by a normal mode analysis and path integral Monte-Carlo (PIMC). For the low-density limit, where the particles are classical, we present results for the eigenfrequencies and eigenmodes and analyze the dependence on the inter-dot distance. Using PIMC we obtain the phase diagram of mesoscopic e-h-bilayers in the full space of temperature, density and interdot distance. Five different phases are identified: exciton liquid, exciton cluster (mesoscopic crystal), decoupled electron and hole crystals (Coulomb crystal), Coulomb liquid and electron-hole plasma.
