Abstract

In our investigations carried out in Chichén Itzá we studied buildings decorated with reliefs and bulk sculptures where persons attired like birds appear to be suspended in the air. We also saw them in nearby places on the Yucatan Peninsula, such as Ek Balam and Tulum. The meaning of these sculptures, apparently, was bound to cosmic legends where men, animals and plants traveled between three planes of the universe: firmament, earth and underworld. We talk about buildings belonging to early periods of occupation of Chichén Itzá (800 to 1000 AD) located in the sectors known as El Osario and Chichén Viejo. The iconological proposal we present here is reinforced with geographical and astronomical studies.
