Abstract

As a part of our continuing thermodynamic study of ternary liquid alloys containing aluminium we have investigated the AlGaSb system. This paper deals with the enthalpies of formation of the AlSb and AlGaSb alloys. Mixing enthalpies of AlGa, AlSb, GaSb and AlGaSb systems were investigated in the temperature range 968–1227 K using the drop method into a Calvet microcalorimeter. Because of the volatility of antimony, the antimony-rich part of the ternary composition triangle could not be studied but an extrapolation from experimental results allows us to propose the AlGaSb isoenthalpic curves on the one hand and the enthalpy of formation of the AlSb system on the other. Some equilibrium temperatures belonging to the liquidus surface were also deduced.
