Abstract

The myenteric plexus-longitudinal muscle preparation of guinea-pig ileum was shown to contain at least one peptide, in the molecular weight range of 10,000 to 20,000 daltons, which on tryptic digestion yielded heterogeneous material causing a naloxone- reversible depression of the contractions of the mouse vas deferens. While the enkephalin content of the preparations was reduced after electrical stimulation (10 Hz, 2 h) in the presence of cycloheximide, the content of the larger peptide(s) was less markedly affected. This evidence may be consistent with the view that the material of high molecular weight does not consist entirely of precursors of enkephalin.
