Abstract
Energy loss straggling of fast heavy ions in gases has been measured with a time-of-flight method. The results are compared to different model calculations. A suprisingly good description is given by ths simple Hvelplund-Firsov formula which does not include charge exchange straggling. By using this formula, also the electronic contribution to the range straggling can be estimated.
