Abstract

Energy distributions of electrons passing through A1 foils of 100 µ to 800 µ thickness in their normal direction from a Van de Graaff type electron accelerator were examined with a 60° deflecting analysing magnet for initial electron energies from 0.6 to 1.2 MeV. The most probable energy loss and the average energy loss were compared with the theoretical values deduced by Landau for heavy particles and those obtained by Bethe for electrons scattered in all directions, respectively. Although the experimental values and the theoretical one have not completely same physical meanings, they seem to be in agreement, but the Blunck-Leisegang theory which is based on the Landau formulation fails to explain the energy distribution curves obtained experimentally.
