Abstract The mean metagalactic energy density of starlight emitted by galaxies is estimated semi-empitically from the galactic luminosity function, and errors in a previous theoretical determination are pointed out. The estimate is independent of the astronomical distance scale, weakly dependent on the choice of cosmological model for a wide variety of models, and somewhat more strongly dependent upon the poorly known infrared and ultraviolet emission by galaxies. The result, 1.5 X 10-24 erg 1 X 10 eV , is probably correct within a factor of 2, but represents only a lower limit on the total photon energy density.
