Abstract

A CFD model for a specific produce simulator is developed to obtain a deep understanding of the mechanisms by which different operating parameters affect the energy consumption of the forced-air cooling process with alternating ventilation mode. In particular, the operating parameters to be analyzed comprise the airflow rate and the switch number. The energy consumption by using the alternating ventilation mode is also compared with that by using the traditional unidirectional ventilation mode. The results show that the cooling time or energy consumption is reduced by using the alternating ventilation mode for any switch number. The maximum values for saving time ratio or energy reduction ratio are 9.21%, 9.25%, and 9.49% for airflow rate of 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 L s-1 kg-1 or for Biot number of 0.29, 0.59, and 1.04, respectively.
