Abstract

This chapter describes the composition and mechanical properties of the bright carbon steel. This steel has many uses. It is a mild steel of 35–45 tons/sq.in. tensile strength, which is supplied in the form of bright bars for machining and many general engineering purposes. The physical and mechanical properties of this steel are dependent upon the carbon content and composition of the metal. The chapter includes the mechanical properties which are actual test results obtained from particular compositions, sizes and conditions, of material supplied to the En 6 specifications. The mechanical properties of the steel are specified for material in th. cold rolled, drawn, cround or machined conditions. The material may be reheated before or after cold working— in the latter case to a temperature not exceeding 620°C.
