Abstract
Electrotherapy can reduce pain and accelerate tissue repair. It is most effective when applied shortly after injury but has also been used successfully to treat chronic wounds. This article is an introduction to the various types of electrotherapeutic procedures available and describes some of the mechanisms by which electrotherapy produces its effects. Forthcoming articles will explore the different types of electrotherapy in more detail.
