Abstract

The electronic structure of hexagonal Gd 3Co 11B 4 compound has been studied by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and ab initio self-consistent tight binding linear muffin tin orbital (TB LMTO) method. We have found a good agreement between the experimental XPS valence band spectra and theoretical LMTO calculations. Results showed that the Gd 3Co 11B 4 compound is ferrimagnetic with the calculated total magnetic moment M=14.29 μ B/f.u. The values of the magnetic moments on Co atoms strongly depend on the local environment. We have also compared the electronic structure and magnetic properties of Gd 3Co 11B 4 compound with those of Nd 3Co 11B 4 compound.
