Abstract

The electronic structure of DyCo 3B 2 compound has been studied by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and the ab initio self-consistent tight binding linear muffin tin orbital (TB LMTO) method. We have found a good agreement between the experimental XPS valence band spectrum and theoretical LMTO calculations. Results showed that the DyCo 3B 2 compound is magnetically ordered with a small magnetic moment on the cobalt atom, which is antiparallel to the dysprosium moment. The values of the magnetic moments on Co atoms strongly depend on the local environment. We have also compared the electronic structure and magnetic properties of DyCo 3B 2 compound with those of the DyCo 5 compound.
