Abstract

A photoelectric spectrophotometer has been developed for studying the feeble light emitted from a gas at low pressure excited by an electron beam of known energy in an equipotential box. The probabilities of excitation of the (0, 0), (0, 1) and (0, 2) negative bands of the nitrogen molecular ion have been measured. The maximum cross section for formation of the ? = 0 level of the upper state involved, B2?, from the ground state of the neutral molecule X1?g+ was found to be (9.5?1.0) x 10-18 cm2 and occurs for electrons of approximately 100 eV energy.
