Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to review the historical milestones, technical details, fields of applications, availability on the market, and cost aspects of polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) water electrolyzers. Recent trends, challenges, possible solutions for performance improvements, cost reduction, and opportunities associated with PEM water electrolysis technologies are discussed as well. It is expected that in view of decarbonization PEM water electrolysis will replace other technologies of hydrogen production in coming decades. Large-scale (multi-MW range) PEM water electrolysis systems are already commercially available and used for highest quality green and yellow hydrogen production. Being efficient and flexible technology, PEM water electrolysis is considered as one of the most appropriate for on-site and on-demand hydrogen (and oxygen) production. Green hydrogen is a key energy carrier and storage media in the framework of the energy transition. Government initiatives and investments in the development of hydrogen infrastructure and associated technologies accelerate the growth of the PEM water electrolyzers market.
