Abstract

In recent years magnesium (Mg) and its alloys are being increasingly investigated as alternatives to iron and aluminum to reduce the weight of structural materials in automotive applications. Relatively poor corrosion resistance of Mg has severely limited the growth of magnesium in automobiles. Coatings via electro-deposition can protect magnesium and its alloys from corroding but challenges associated with this technology are in the use of toxic chemicals such as chromium, cyanide, fluoride and corrosive acid based pretreatment and bath solutions. In this manuscript we report the electro-deposition of niobium on magnesium using green ionic liquids. The SEM-EDS elemental analysis confirmed the deposition of niobium on magnesium alloy. Optimization of process parameters are needed to obtain a stress and pore free coating.
