Abstract

The existence of Mentawai tattoos as a form of social cultural resistance in the islands of West Sumatra. The existence of the Mentawai tattoo culture in West Sumatra in today's increasingly modern times is a question of some circles. A strong tattoo culture of its origins was cultivated from generation to generation, is it still carried on by young people today? The tattooing process which still uses traditional techniques, tools, and materials may be one of the reasons for young people today. Young people are more interested in more modern tattoo motifs and techniques, on the other hand, since it was issued through SK No.167 / PROMOSI / 1954, which ordered the Mentawai tribe to leave their tattoo tradition and belief, Arat Sabulungan. The Mentawai people began to leave this culture and build life to follow its time. However, the tattoo culture itself has become a Mentawai identity which has been widely recognized by the Indonesian people through its origins, techniques, motifs, tools, and materials which are unique to the Mentawai people. The purpose of this study was to find information about Mentawai tattoos from their origins to the current existence of tattoos using qualitative methods. Data collection was carried out by means of a literature study. The data obtained were then analyzed and described in full. The possible results are selfacceptance, feeling equal to others, the self-concept that is built, and the vestiges of the existence of tattoos that are no longer cultured. Keywords: Existence; tattoos; mentawai culture
