Abstract

Three-layer bamboo parquet elements are assessed regarding density, hardness, abrasion, equilibrium moisture content, swelling and colour changes under UV-radiation. The bamboo elements are compared with beech and oak strips. The determination of the swelling parameters includes the influence of the inner layer orientation parallel resp. perpendicular to the grain of the top layers. For the UV-radiation two types of bamboo were used: natural of clear yellow colour and steamed, of dark brown colour. The comparison between bamboo and the two types of hardwood shows similar behaviour for the properties hardness, abrasion and colour fading. However, the bamboo material shows fundamental differences in swelling behaviour due to a) a different relationship between radial and tangential swelling, and b) process-induced reduction in hygroscopicity and swelling values.
