Effects of the modified Bunao Xifeng Zhijing decoction combined with the Xingnao Kaiqiao acupuncture on the levels of serum MDA, CysC, and SOD and the quality of life in elderly patients with Parkinson's disease

Abstract

Objective To investigate the effects of the modified Bunao Xifeng Zhijing decoction combined with the Xingnao Kaiqiao acupuncture on the levels of serum malondialdehyde (MDA), cystatin C (CysC), and superoxide dismutase (SOD), and the quality of life in elderly patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Methods A total of 86 cases of elderly patients with PD treated in our hospital from March 2015 to January 2017 were selected and were randomly divided into the observation group (n=43) and the control group (n=43). The control group was treated with levodopa, and the observation group was treated with the modified Bunao Xifeng Zhijing decoction and the Xingnao Kaiqiao acupuncture on the basis of the control group. The clinical efficacy of the two groups was statistically compared. The levels of serum MDA, CysC, and SOD, and the quality of life (SF-36) score were compared between the two groups before and after treatment. Results The total effective rate was 93.02% (40/43) in the observation group, which was higher than that in the control group [74.42% (32/43)], with statistically significant difference (P<0.05). The levels of serum MDA and CysC in the observation group were lower than those in the control group after treatment, and the SOD level was higher than that in the control group, with statistically significant differences (P<0.05). After treatment, the SF-36 score of the quality of life in the observation group was higher than that in the control group, with statistically significant difference (P<0.05). Conclusion The modified Bunao Xifeng Zhijing decoction and the Xingnao Kaiqiao acupuncture in the treatment of elderly patients with Parkinson’s disease can reduce the levels of serum MDA and CysC, can improve the level of SOD, with obvious curative effect, is helpful to improve the quality of life of patients.
