Abstract

Fatigue-test results are given for torsion with bending in cylindrical steel 45 specimens having small semicircular profile notches and with and without residual stresses. The effects of hardening on the fatigue resistance are evaluated from a residual-stress criterion. The test data for the unhardened and hardened specimens are closely described by the equation of an ellipse, which enables one to express the margin coefficient in torsion with bending with allowance for the residual stresses.
