Abstract

The electrical properties of ZnO-based varistors are closely dependent on the microstructure of ZnO ceramics which is sensitive to the sintering process. In this study, the effects of pre-calcination and sintering temperature on the microstructure and electrical properties of ZnO-based varistors were investigated. The patterns of X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and the morphologies of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the secondary phase distributed along the boundaries of ZnO grains. After pre-calcined at 800 °C and then sintered at 950 °C, ZnO-based varistors exhibited the optimal electrical properties, of which the breakdown field is 1602 V/mm and the nonlinear coefficient is 37.4.
