The article describes the phenomenon of modern childhood in terms of the influence of information technologies on the development of the cognitive and speech mechanisms as a result of the human interaction with new virtual environments of existence at various stages of ontogenesis, starting with toddlers and ending with early adolescence. It provides a brief overview of the data of domestic and foreign studies and an analysis of their results. An attempt is made to find a "golden mean", a balance of positive and negative effects of technology. The topic of natural and focused polylinguistic development is addressed.
