Abstract

As the number of people diagnosed with type 1 and type 2 diabetes escalates, health professionals will be responsible for prescribing insulin and insulin secretagogues for ever-increasing numbers of people. Unfortunately, hypoglycaemia is a main side effect of therapy with these classes of drugs. This article considers the relationship between insulin production and secretion and its link to type 1 and type 2 diabetes. It explores the incidence and some of the causes of hypoglycaemia in people with diabetes. Finally, effective treatment options to increase blood glucose levels quickly and safely are discussed.
