Abstract

Spermidine strongly stimulates the activity of DNA polymerase B but is ineffective in stimulating the activity of DNA polymerase A of rat brain. The extent to which spermidine stimulates the activity of DNA polymerase B depends on the DNA template used. Spermidine cannot replace Mg 2+ for DNA polymerase B activity. The stimulatory effect of spermidine does not seem to be due to removal of histone. The stimulation of DNA polymerase B activity by spermidine is much greater at lower concentrations of enzyme than at higher concentrations and so the enzyme concentration curve for DNA polymerase B is more linear in the presence of spermidine than in the absence.
