Abstract

Cu 54Ni 6Zr 22Ti 18 metallic glass powders with spherical morphology and clean surfaces were synthesized using high-pressure gas atomization. In order to investigate the effect of powder size distribution on consolidation, which was performed using warm extrusion, the powders were divided into four groups. Little difference in the thermal behaviors of powders was found with the powder size distribution. Extruded bars are amorphous structure when consolidated at a suitable, temperature in their supercooled liquid state. As the powder size decreased, the compressive strength of the extrudated samples decreased. Fracture occurred along the maximum shear plane declined ∼45° to the loading direction.
