Abstract

The main aim of this work is to study the effect of Multiwalled carbon nanotubes used as nano additives in C. Inophyllum biodiesel blend on the performance, combustion and emission parameters of a diesel engine. The MWCNTs were added into the C. Inophyllum biodiesel blend (CIB20) in the concentrations of 20, 40, 60 and 80 ppm with the aid of the ultrasonicator. The fuel properties of the test fuels were measured according to the ASTM standards. The performance, combustion and emission parameters of a single cylinder diesel engine by using test fuel samples were determined. The results shows that the brake thermal efficiency of the CIB20 fuel with 60 ppm MWCNTs were higher than the other fuel samples. The exhaust emissions of CO, HC, NOx and smoke were reduced with the addition of MWCNTs into the CIB20 fuel compared to the biodiesel blends. A slight improvement in the CO2 emissions for the nano additive fuel samples than diesel and CIB20 fuel. It is concluded that addition of MWCNTs in to the CIB20 fuel shows the better results compared to the CIB20 fuel.
