Abstract
Recently, two reduced-state detection processes for distorted digital signals have been proposed. These can achieve near-maximum-likehood performance without the computational difficulties associated with the Viterbi algorithm. The paper studies the effect of the merging of stored vectors on these processes and explains how and why this can result in a deterioration in performance. Two modifications to avoid merging are given.
