Abstract

It has been shown that the influence of different sources of nitrogen incorporated into the composition of the nutrient medium on the production of exopolysaccharides from Nostoc linckia (Roth) Born. et Flah., st. 102 (Cyanophyta) is pronounced and depends on nitrogen form. The nitrate sources of nitrogen (NaNO3, КNО3) and mineral nitrogen limitation promote acceleration of the culture growth and increase the carbohydrate pool in cells of trichomes, polyglycanes of mucous sheaths and culture medium. Ammonium nitrogen (NH4Cl, (NH4)2SO4), irrespective of previous adaptation of algae to it, inhibits the growth processes and the accumulation of carbohydrates in cells of trichomes and mucous sheaths. The prolonged cultivation of N. linckia results in an abundant production of mucus with the polysaccharides that contain sulfate and carboxylic substituents. The accumulation of exopolysaccharides is an adaptive mechanism used by algae under conditions of moisture deficit.
