Abstract
The compressive pre-stress dependence of magnetostriction and magnetostriction hysteresis of 〈1 1 0〉 oriented Tb 0.29Dy 0.48Ho 0.23Fe 2 crystal has been investigated. The 〈1 1 0〉 oriented crystals in Tb 0.29Dy 0.48Ho 0.23Fe 2 alloy has been successfully prepared by zone melting unidirectional solidification. An obvious magnetostriction “jump” effect is observed with the increase of compressive pre-stress from 0 MPa to 45 MPa. The magnetostriction ( λ) at 400 mT and the magnetostriction hysteresis ( W h) monotonously increases with the increase of compressive pre-stress, and these saturate at 20 MPa compressive pre-stress. This is due to the increase in volume fraction of 90° domains rotation with the increase in compressive pre-stress, and both of these properties saturate when all of the initial domain moments distribute normal to the axis of the compressive pre-stress.
