Abstract
A γ-aluminum oxynitride (γ-AlON) dispersion in an alumina matrix can lead to a composite ceramic with equivalent properties to those of a single phase alumina at room temperature. The Al 2O 3-γAlON is obtained by pressureless sintering or hot-pressing of intimate mixtures of α alumina and aluminum nitride powders. The best treatment temperature is about 1700°C. The composite presents a high wear resistance; its flexural properties at high temperature are higher than those of alumina.
