Abstract
The life and activities of Ioann Maxymovych (1651-1715), a prominent church figure and writer, have repeatedly attracted the attention of researchers. A significant number of investigations are dedicated to his biography and creative works. Almost his entire life was associated with Ukraine. Ioann Maxymovych – educator, church figure, missionary, spiritual writer, Archbishop of Chernihiv and Novgorod-Siversky, Metropolitan of Tobolsk, belongs to the ranks of saints, enlightener of the peoples of Siberia, founder of the first higher education institution on the Left-Bank of Ukraine – Chernihiv Collegium. The article considers the period of life of Ioann Maximovich from 1697-1711, which falls on the time of his active work at the Chernihiv department. The importance of his own efforts in promoting the development of education and enlightenment was emphasized: the establishment of the Chernigov Collegium; literary and translation activities; funding and maintenance of the library and diocesan typography, etc. The article analyzes the rich experience of educational and charitable activities of Ioann Maksimovich in supporting the formation of the Chernihiv diocese, its spiritual and cultural development at the beginning of the 18th century.
