Abstract
Chinese education, especially higher education, has undergone a rapid, large-scale expansion since the late 1990s. However, disparities between the sexes, between regions and between socioeconomic groups still persist, resulting in different development paths in education. This chapter uses the last four population censuses conducted in 1982, 1990, 2000 and 2010 to show recent trends in education, focusing especially on higher and adult education. The analysis methods used are period and cohort comparisons. The profile of educational attainment is viewed from the perspectives of age, sex, cohort, province, and the urban-rural divide, and the implications for social development are discussed.
