Abstract

This article shows the partial results of a research conducted at the Madre Pelletier women's prison (PFMP, acronym in Portuguese) in Porto Alegre between March 2006 and March 2009, where it an undergraduate course in social work was offered in regular mode by the IPA (Porto Alegre Institute) Methodist University Center to inmates, correctional officers and employees of the Superintendent of Correctional Services (Susepe, acronym in Portuguese). The study aimed at finding how the experience of IPA would happen in the context of the prison, offering higher education to that population. The graduation of the first student members of the Madre Pelletier Project happened in 2009. In this study it was used the case study methodology. Data collection took place through semi-structured interviews and through participant observation of the whole process experienced by IPA inside the PFMP. The results obtained from the project show the significant social importance of the inclusion of imprisoned women in higher education.
