Abstract
One of the main characteristics of mass media is its potential to influence public opinion. The present study used content analysis to examine the stance of three newspapers in Arizona between 2003 and 2011 in regard to the educational models for English learners. The newspapers selected for the study were The Arizona Republic, the East Valley Tribune and La Prensa Hispana. The analysis of the texts (N=84) showed that the three publications maintained distinct opinions about the programs for English learners. The English speaking newspapers informed from standpoints based on the hegemony of the English language and the need of Hispanic students to assimilate. La Prensa Hispana, on the other hand, affirmed the right of the students to use their primary language and the need of multilingual policies in education.
