Abstract

The ever increasing population demands more food for their nourishment. In addition, currently people across the world have become health conscious demanding food with less calories and high fiber content. To this end, marine algae have the potential to meet this demand as they are rich in various nutrients and fibers as well as they can grow very fast. At the same time, their caloric index is low. In addition, they also contain many different bioactive compounds such as polyphenols, flavonoids that can combat microbial invasions. Bioactive compounds also exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer activity. Moreover, these algae have the potential to be used in the purification of both domestic and industrial waste water, in the generation of biofuel in a sustainable manner. Taken together in the coming days, algae can potentially be used as food and for the sustainable development of human civilization. In the present study, beneficial aspects of marine algae have been discussed.
