Abstract

The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is one of the six principal organs of the UN as laid down in the Charter of the UN. Its purpose is to discuss, promote and coordinate the economic, social, cultural and humanitarian activities of the UN. In accordance with Article 62 and 64 UN Charter, ECOSOC can conduct or initiate studies and reports with respect to international economic, social, cultural, educational, health, and related matters. The Council can make recommendations to the General Assembly and to the specialized agencies concerned in promoting respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms. In performing these tasks and functions, ECOSOC established a number of subsidiary organs in accordance with Article 68 of the Charter.
